Stability, efficiency, and user-centric improvements are the focus of our latest update at BuddyBoss. As the year progresses, we commit to enhancing your experience with our platform, making sure every interaction is smoother, faster, and more intuitive. This update is defined by significant bug fixes that streamline your BuddyBoss Platform and App usage, directly addressing the feedback from our community.

In this post, we dive into the technical tweaks and bug fixes made across both the BuddyBoss Platform and App. These changes are not just about ironing out imperfections; they are strides toward perfecting the user experience, ensuring that every feature functions at its best for the benefit of our community.

BuddyBoss Web

Our platform is the backbone of your online community, and in this update, we’ve launched a new feature called Login & Logout Redirect. We’ve also solved a lot of bugs to ensure a smoother experience for you and your users.

Introducing Login & Logout Redirect

In our continuous effort to support growing communities, we’re excited to unveil the Login & Logout Redirect feature. This new functionality is designed to enhance the user journey by allowing administrators to set specific URLs for users to be redirected to after logging in or logging out.

This feature is particularly impactful because of its customization capabilities. Now, you can create different post-login destinations for each Profile Type. For instance, students can be automatically directed to a page with their course materials, while instructors might land on a dashboard with teaching resources. Similarly, logged-out users can be guided to a welcome page or promotional content, ensuring they stay engaged with your community. This level of personalization not only improves navigation but also ensures that users are immediately presented with content that is most relevant and engaging to them.

Bug Fixes

BuddyBoss Bugs No More

🔄 Profile Sync Update: We recognized that social network links were clinging to profile headers even after users attempted to remove them from the backend.

This fix ensures that when a user decides to remove a social network from their profile, this change is now immediately visible on the profile header, maintaining the accuracy of the user’s profile information.

🚫 Tag Previews Corrected: We identified an issue where pasting a post with a mention inadvertently generated a preview thumbnail. This was not only unexpected but also cluttered the post.

This is now resolved, so mentions in posts will not trigger any preview, maintaining the clarity and intent of your messages.

⏱️ Improved Posting Speed: Users with extensive follower networks were facing delays in posting updates, affecting the dynamic nature of community interactions.

We’ve optimized the process to ensure posting is now equally swift for all users, irrespective of their follower count.

👥 Group Hierarchy Management: When admins moved a group into a subgroup, members of the moved group weren’t automatically added to the parent group, despite the relevant setting being activated.

We’ve now fixed this process. When a group is moved, all members are added to the parent group, adhering to your intended group structure and simplifying group management.

BuddyBoss App

The app extends the reach of your community, and our updates ensure it remains a reliable companion wherever you go. Below is the rundown of app-specific bug fixes.

Bug

🎞️ Visible Video Counts: Users highlighted that the count of uploaded videos was missing in the ‘My Groups’ filter on the Videos page.

We’ve addressed this by ensuring video counts are now displayed across all filters, providing a clearer and more comprehensive view of content engagement.

🔗 In-App Password Reset: We found that after a password reset, the reset link was erroneously redirecting users to the web version of the platform. This disrupted the seamless app experience.

We’ve corrected this, ensuring that the entire reset process keeps users within the native app environment.

🔕 Group Subscription Visibility: There was an issue where disabling the Notification Component led to the disappearance of group subscriptions.

Recognizing the importance of these subscriptions in managing community engagement, we’ve made sure they remain visible and functional, independent of the notification settings.

🙂 Emoji Activation: If users inserted emojis from their mobile keyboards without accompanying text, the post button remained inactive.

We’ve now refined the input detection so that the presence of just an emoji is enough to activate the post button, enabling you to communicate with just the tap of a smiley.

📘 Course Block Integration: Adding Course Blocks was causing an error message and triggering a web fallback. This was less than ideal, as it disrupted the native app experience.

We’ve re-engineered this feature to ensure Course Blocks integrate smoothly and display correctly, maintaining the seamless native app experience you expect.

✉️ Mailto Links on Android: A frustrating issue for Android app users was the malfunctioning of mailto links, which are crucial for initiating quick email communication. Instead of opening the default email app, these links were doing, well, nothing.

We’ve fixed the bug, restoring the functionality that allows you to use mailto links as intended.

BuddyBoss Platform

What’s New

This month, we are  we are thrilled to announce a powerful feature to the messaging functionality on the BuddyBoss platform. With this new feature, site administrators now have the ability to allow specific profile types to send messages even if they are not connected to each other.

Previously, when users wanted to initiate a conversation with someone, they needed to be connected as friends or have some form of relationship within the community. While this approach is valuable for maintaining a sense of privacy and control over who can message whom, it may not always align with the unique needs of certain communities.

With the new feature, site administrators have the flexibility to customize the messaging experience based on the profile types within their community. For example, you can create specific profile types such as “Verified Experts” or “Mentors” and allow them to send messages to any user, irrespective of their connection status.

Enhancements to The Existing Features:

  • Identified code improvements across different components by taking reference from BuddyPress recent releases. Staying up-to-date with the latest advancements ensures optimal performance and reliability.
  • New repair option to recalculate group member count for each group. Easily manage and maintain accurate member counts for your groups.

Bugs Fixed This Month

  • Unable to click the activity comments from the group search when a member was tagged using the “@” function. This issue has been resolved, ensuring smooth navigation within the activity comments.
  • Child group was displaying the parent group description from the subgroup page. This bug has been fixed, and now the correct descriptions are displayed.
  • Unable to download folders due to size constraints. We’ve addressed this issue, and now you can download folders without any limitations.
  • Clear API cache when a member is blocked/unblocked. Improved cache handling ensures accurate data representation in different scenarios.
  • Events page was showing blank instead of the login screen when visited from the guest user on a private site. This issue has been fixed, and now the events page displays correctly.
  • Fixed access to public pages as a logged-out user, so it no longer redirects to the login form. Enjoy seamless navigation even as a guest user on your site.

BuddyBoss Theme

Bugs Fixed This Month

  • “My Discussion” link was displaying a 404 error when using Elementor ‘Forum Activity’ widget if the forums page slug was updated. This has been fixed, and the link now works as expected.
  • Using the forum shortcode in the sidebar no longer causes UI issues, including the new discussion popup being blocked. Your forum UI will function smoothly.
  • Templates updated for WooCommerce 7.8.0, ensuring compatibility with the latest WooCommerce version.

BuddyBoss App

What’s New

We understand the importance of providing a consistent and unified experience for your community members, regardless of whether they are accessing your community platform from a desktop or a mobile device. Are you tired of creating assessments and quizzes that bore your students to tears? Do you find yourself struggling to come up with questions that actually test your students’ understanding of the material? Fear not, because we’re here to help!

Assessments and quizzes are a crucial part of any course, but creating ones that are both effective and engaging can be a real challenge. Luckily, with a few tips and tricks, you can turn your assessments and quizzes from snooze-fests into engaging and effective tools for learning.

In this post, we’ll be sharing my top tips for creating great assessments and quizzes that your students will actually enjoy taking. We’ll cover everything from defining learning objectives and writing effective questions to designing assessments that are engaging and grading them fairly.

So grab a cup of coffee (or tea, if that’s more your thing) and let’s dive in. By the end of this post, you’ll be a quiz and assessment ninja, creating online course assessment that your students will actually look forward to taking. Sounds too good to be true? It’s not! Let’s make it happen.

Defining Learning Objectives

Learning Objective

When it comes to creating effective online course assessment and quizzes, one of the most important steps is defining clear and measurable learning objectives. Learning objectives are the specific goals that you want your students to achieve by the end of your course or lesson. They provide a roadmap for your assessments and quizzes, helping you to create questions that actually test your students’ understanding of the material.

So why are learning objectives so important? For one, they help you to stay focused and organized as you create your assessments and quizzes. Without clear learning objectives, you may end up creating questions that are too broad or too vague, which can make it difficult to accurately assess your students’ understanding of the material.

Additionally, learning objectives help to communicate to your students what they should be able to do by the end of the course or lesson. This helps to give them a sense of purpose and direction, which can be motivating and engaging. If your students know exactly what they’re working towards, they may be more likely to put in the effort to achieve those goals.

So how do you create clear and measurable learning objectives? Here are a few tips:

1. Start with the big picture: Begin by thinking about what you want your students to be able to do by the end of the course or lesson. What are the most important skills or concepts that they should master?

For example, if you’re teaching a course on biology, your learning objectives might include things like “Students will be able to identify the different types of cells” or “Students will be able to explain the process of photosynthesis.”

2. Be specific: Your learning objectives should be clear and specific, so that both you and your students know exactly what you expect from them. Use action verbs to describe what your students should be able to do.

For example, instead of saying “Students will understand the concept of photosynthesis,” you might say “Students will be able to explain the process of photosynthesis.”

3. Make them measurable: Your learning objectives should be measurable, so that you can accurately assess whether or not your students have achieved them. This means that they should be observable and quantifiable.

For example, instead of saying “Students will appreciate the beauty of poetry,” you might say “Students will be able to identify at least three literary devices used in a poem and explain how they contribute to the overall meaning of the poem.”

Types of Online Course Assessment

There are several different types of assessments that you can use in your course or lesson. Each type of assessment serves a different purpose, and understanding when and how to use each type can help you create effective and engaging assessments and quizzes. Here’s a brief overview of some of the most common types of assessment:

Diagnostic assessment: A diagnostic assessment is used to gauge students’ prior knowledge and understanding of a topic. It can help you identify any gaps in your students’ knowledge and adjust your teaching accordingly. For example, if you’re teaching a course on math, you might give your students a diagnostic assessment at the beginning of the course to see what they already know.

Formative assessment: A formative assessment is used to monitor students’ learning as you teach a topic. It can help you identify any areas where your students are struggling and adjust your teaching accordingly. Formative assessments can take many forms, such as quizzes, short assignments, or class discussions.

Interim assessment: An interim assessment is used to check students’ progress midway through a course or lesson. It can help you identify any areas where your students are still struggling and adjust your teaching accordingly. Interim assessments can be helpful for both you and your students, as they can provide a sense of how much progress has been made.

Benchmark assessment: A benchmark assessment is used to compare students’ progress to a set standard. It can help you determine whether or not your students are meeting the goals and objectives of your course or lesson. Benchmark assessments are often used at the end of a unit or course to evaluate overall progress.

Summative assessment: A summative assessment is used to evaluate students’ overall understanding of a topic at the end of a course or lesson. It can take many forms, such as a final exam, a research paper, or a project. Summative assessments are often used to assign grades and provide feedback on overall performance.

So when should you use each type of assessment? It really depends on your goals and objectives for the course or lesson. If you want to identify any gaps in your students’ prior knowledge, a diagnostic assessment can be helpful. Or If you want to monitor learning as you teach, formative assessments can be useful. If you want to compare progress to a set standard, a benchmark assessment may be helpful. And if you want to evaluate overall understanding of a topic, a summative assessment is likely the way to go.

Types of Quiz Questions

Quiz Questions

When it comes to creating effective quizzes, choosing the right type of question can make all the difference. There are several different types of quiz questions you can use, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Here’s an overview of some of the most common types of quiz questions:

1. Multiple choice: Multiple choice questions present a question or statement with several possible answers. The student selects the correct answer from the choices provided. Multiple choice questions assesses a variety of knowledge and skills, from basic recall to higher-order thinking.

Example: Which of the following is a primary color?

A) Red

B) Purple

C) Green

D) Orange

2. Multiple Response: Multiple response questions present a question or statement with several possible answers, and the student must select all of the correct answers. Multiple response questions can be used to assess knowledge of complex concepts.

Example: Which of the following are renewable energy sources? Select all that apply.

A) Coal

B) Solar

C) Wind

D) Natural gas

3. True/False: True/false questions present a statement and the student selects whether the statement is true or false. True/false questions are easy to write and can be used to assess basic knowledge and understanding.

Example: The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. True or false?

4. Short Answer: Short answer questions require students to provide a brief written response to a question. Short answer questions can be used to assess understanding and application of knowledge.

Example: What is the capital of France?

5. Fill-in-the-Blank: Fill-in-the-blank questions present a statement with one or more words missing, and the student must fill in the correct word(s). Fill-in-the-blank questions can assess knowledge of specific terminology or facts.

Example: The Declaration of Independence was signed in July ___, 1776.

6. Matching: Matching questions present two lists of items and the student must match the items from one list to the corresponding items in the other list. Matching questions can be used to assess knowledge of relationships between concepts.

Example: Match the president to the correct term in office:

A) George Washington

B) Abraham Lincoln

C) Franklin D. Roosevelt

D) Barack Obama

i. 1789-1797

ii. 1861-1865

iii. 1933-1945

iv. 2009-2017

7. Essay: Essay questions require students to write a longer response to a question or prompt. Essay questions can be used to assess higher-order thinking skills, such as analysis and synthesis.

Example: Describe the causes and consequences of the Civil War.

Designing Assessments and Quizzes

Designing Quiz

When it comes to designing online course assessment and quizzes, there are a number of key factors that can help ensure they are effective tools for measuring learning outcomes. Here are some tips to consider:

Keep it relevant: Make sure that the assessment or quiz is closely aligned with the learning objectives you have identified for the course. This will help ensure that the questions are meaningful and the results are actionable.

Consider the format: There are many different types of online course assessment and quizzes, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Consider which format will best suit your learning objectives and the material being covered. For example, multiple choice questions are great for assessing knowledge, while essay questions can be useful for measuring critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Use clear and concise language: Make sure that the questions and instructions are written in language that is easy to understand. Avoid using jargon or technical terms that may confuse learners.

Use visuals where appropriate: Visual aids such as diagrams, charts, and graphs can be useful for helping learners understand complex concepts or relationships between different ideas.

Incorporate feedback: Consider providing learners with feedback on their performance on the assessment or quiz. This can help them understand where they need to focus their efforts to improve their understanding of the material.

Examples of Well-designed Online Course Assessment and Quizzes:

  • A quiz that includes a mix of different types of questions, such as multiple choice, true/false, and short answer, to assess different types of knowledge and skills.
  • A formative assessment that includes a mix of open-ended questions and feedback to help learners understand how they are progressing towards their learning objectives.
  • An assessment that includes a mix of text-based questions and visual aids to help learners understand complex concepts.

Examples of Poorly-designed Online Course Assessment and Quizzes:

  • A quiz that includes questions that are not closely aligned with the learning objectives of the course.
  • An assessment that includes questions that are overly complex or confusing, making it difficult for learners to understand what is being asked of them.
  • A quiz that includes only multiple choice questions, making it difficult to measure other types of knowledge and skills.

Grading and Feedback

Grading

Grading and feedback are important components of any assessment or quiz. They not only provide learners with a sense of how well they have performed, but also help them to understand where they need to focus their efforts to improve their understanding of the material. Here are some tips to help you grade assessments and quizzes fairly and efficiently, and provide effective feedback:

Establish clear grading criteria: Make sure that you have a clear set of grading criteria established before you begin grading. This will help ensure that you are grading consistently and fairly across all learners.

Use a rubric: Consider using a rubric to help you grade assessments and quizzes. A rubric provides a clear set of guidelines for grading, making it easier to ensure that you are grading consistently and fairly.

Use technology: Technology can be a great tool for grading online course assessment and quizzes efficiently. Many learning management systems (LMS) have built-in grading tools that can help you grade assessments and quizzes quickly and accurately.

Provide feedback: Providing feedback is important for helping learners understand where they need to focus their efforts to improve their understanding of the material. Consider providing feedback on both correct and incorrect answers, and be specific about what the learner did well and where they can improve.

Use a mix of feedback types: There are many different types of feedback that can be effective, including written feedback, audio feedback, and video feedback. Consider using a mix of different types of feedback to keep learners engaged and motivated.

Examples of Effective Feedback:

  • Written feedback that is specific and actionable, highlighting both strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Audio feedback that is delivered in a clear and engaging tone, providing learners with a sense of how well they are progressing.
  • Video feedback that includes examples of correct and incorrect answers, helping learners to understand where they need to focus their efforts to improve their understanding of the material.

Examples of Ineffective Feedback:

  • Feedback that is too general or vague, providing little guidance to learners on how they can improve their performance.
  • Feedback that is overly critical or negative, which can discourage learners and make them feel demotivated.
  • Feedback that is delivered in a monotone or unengaging manner, making it difficult for learners to stay focused and engaged.

Welcome to the latest BuddyBoss monthly product update! As always, we’re excited to share with you the latest features, enhancements, and bug fixes that we’ve been working on to improve your BuddyBoss experience.

In this month’s product update, we’re excited to share with you some major updates across our BuddyBoss Platform, BuddyBoss Theme, and BuddyBoss App. These updates are designed to enhance your user experience and provide even more options for customization and control.

Let’s dive in and take a closer look at what’s new this month!

BuddyBoss Platform

Last month was a busy and productive time for the BuddyBoss Platform. We are thrilled to share the latest features, enhancements, and bug fixes that we rolled out to our users. Let’s take a moment to reflect on the progress we made in the past month.

What’s New

Secured URLs for Member Profiles

Secured Profile URLs

We are thrilled to announce that our latest BuddyBoss platform update includes a highly requested feature – Secured URLs for Member Profiles. In response to your feedback, we have added a new functionality that enables you to change the identifier used in member profile URLs.

This means that instead of using a member’s username to create their profile URL (like www.domain.com/members/username), you can now use a unique identifier instead. With this new feature, we have addressed some privacy concerns and given you even more flexibility to customize your site.

Automatically Follow Members After Connecting

Automatically Follow Members After Connecting

With our latest update, we have introduced an optional setting that allows you to automatically follow members after connecting with them. This is an additional feature that we were requested by some of you after releasing the ‘Notification for new activity posts by someone you’re following‘ feature. This makes it even easier to stay connected with favorite members and keep up with their updates.

Enhancements to The Existing Features

As part of our ongoing efforts to provide a seamless user experience, we’re excited to share some of the enhancements we’ve made to the BuddyBoss platform this month. Here are a couple of notable updates that will take your experience to the next level:

  • We’ve revamped the way we get member login status, resulting in a faster and smoother experience for all our users. We’ve introduced an independent PHP file or an MU Plugin to obtain this information, depending on what’s executable on your server. This means you’ll be able to enjoy a faster and more seamless experience than before.
  • We’ve also made some significant improvements to our Pusher integration, which now allows you to share socket connections when you have multiple browser tabs open. This not only makes things more efficient but also reduces your usage limit from Pusher.

Bugs Solved This Month

Bug

We’ve been hard at work addressing bugs and issues throughout the BuddyBoss platform. Here are some of the notable highlights of our efforts:

  • We have disabled Activity, Activity comment, media description, forums discussion, and reply forms post button when content doesn’t exist or media is not uploaded.
  • Fixed a profile search issue for fields configured as ‘only me’ privacy.
  • Resolved the issue with group documents pagination.
  • Fixed critical issues with settings API when all moderation options are disabled, enhancing security.
  • Fixed the display name issue for newly registered members when the Moderation component is active.
  • Fixed the delete activity post permission issue for group organizers in social groups.
  • Improved performance and security by updating several JS libraries.
  • Improved the Gutenberg block for Zoom by allowing “search and select” for the timezone field.
  • Fixed the group message permission issue when access control is configured for messages.

BuddyBoss Theme

We’ve addressed a few bugs and issues for BuddyBoss Theme to make sure that everything runs smoothly. Firstly, we fixed the sub-menu margin issue in a responsive view for BuddyPanel, ensuring that users can navigate the site with ease.

Additionally, we resolved an issue with scroll to specific blog comment not working when the header is configured as sticky for Blog, making it easier for users to find the information they need.

Lastly, we fixed the issues for single lesson and topic sidebar unable to toggle for logged-out users in LearnDash. These bug fixes ensure that BuddyBoss Theme runs as intended, providing an optimal experience for all users.

We spend a lot of time planning and developing innovative features to improve the user experience with our mobile app. Additionally, we are constantly working on enhancing existing features to ensure a seamless experience. Here’s the updates to BuddyBoss mobile app for the month of April.

What’s New

To kick things off, let’s dive into the latest additions to the BuddyBoss app.

GamiPress Support in Access Control

We’re thrilled to announce that you can now restrict access to content based on ranks using GamiPress. With this exciting new feature, you’ll have more control over who can access what on your website. As always, we value your feedback and would love to hear your thoughts on this feature before its official release. Let us know what you think!

 Enhancements to The Existing Features

We have been working on making improvements to the BuddyBoss App that will enhance its performance and modernize the user experience. While some of these changes may not be immediately noticeable, we are confident they will make a significant difference in the overall performance of the app.

  • One of the key improvements we’ve made is to our Push Notifications feature. We’ve implemented better database management and optimized scheduling to ensure improved responsiveness and enhanced security. Additionally, we’ve updated Firebase to use the new v1 API, which provides even better performance and reliability.
  • We’re also excited to introduce our new Icon Set, which now supports a foreground color when using Rounded or Boxes with the Filled icon style. This gives you even more flexibility and customization options for your app.
  • We’ve also added a deeplink for LearnDash Course Categories, making it easier than ever to quickly navigate to specific categories.
  • Finally, we’ve made improvements to Memberium compatibility, ensuring that restrictions on App Pages are properly blocked.

Bugs Solved This Month

Bug

Here are some recent bug fixes that we’ve made to improve your experience on the BuddyBoss platform:

  • We’ve resolved several bugs related to quizzes in LearnDash, ensuring that they work smoothly and without any hiccups.
  • We’ve also fixed an issue that was forcing sub-sites to use the same menu in Multisite, giving you more control and customization options for your website.
